Preparing Your Holiday
Home For Winter

Protecting Your Home Away from Home

As the colder months roll in, it’s worth taking a little time to protect your caravan – whether you’re closing down for the season or simply safeguarding it between visits. Winter prep isn’t just about avoiding frozen pipes or damp cushions. It’s about peace of mind, knowing your space is safe, dry, and ready when you are.

Here’s our guide to keeping your caravan cosy, cared for, and winter-ready.

Why Winter Holiday Home Prep Matters

Cold weather can be tough on caravans. Damp, frozen pipes, and general wear can creep in quietly and cost you dearly later. A few simple steps now can save you time, money, and stress come spring.

Drain Down & Water Systems

Water expands when it freezes –  and that means burst pipes if left unchecked.

  • Drain all water, pipes, and taps cisterns and other appliances.
  • Leave taps open once drained to prevent pressure build-up.
  • Consider investing in a Drain Down Kit – it takes just minutes to use and can make winter prep quick and stress-free. If the drain kit is fully used correctly then you should be compliant with your insurance, but it’s worth checking.
  • If your caravan is left empty between the months of October and March, then most insurance companies specify that it should be drained down between that period.

Damp Prevention

Damp is sneaky – and it loves enclosed spaces. Make sure to leave internal doors and cupboard doors slightly ajar to encourage airflow. Use moisture traps or a small dehumidifier, and check seals around windows and doors for cracks or gaps.

Exterior & Roof Checks

Your caravan’s outer shell is its first line of defence. Be mindful to:
  • Inspect for cracks, loose panels, or signs of wear.
  • Clear gutters and check skylights for leaks.
  • A quick visual check after heavy rain or frost can make all the difference.

Underfloor Insulation Spotlight

If your caravan feels chilly even when you’re in it, underfloor insulation might be worth exploring. It helps retain heat, reduce damp, and protect pipes. Use a trusted company who are experienced in this service.

Interior Protection

A clean, dry interior is key to a happy return. Ensure you:

  • Empty and clean the fridge and freezer, leave doors ajar to prevent mould.

  • Remove soft furnishings or cover them with breathable sheets.

  •  Consider pest prevention: remove or seal food, check for entry points, and avoid clutter.

  • And if your caravan is up for sale, presentation matters. Keeping it fresh, clean, and well-maintained helps it stand out to potential buyers.
